About

Anja Hendrikse Liu with a stack of books

Anja (she/they) is a writer of fantasy and science fiction. Some of her stories have been chosen for award nominations and a best-of anthology. Many of them veer toward the whimsical, the mythological, the queer, and the places where magic collides with real life. In addition to her published short fiction and creative nonfiction, she also writes YA fantasy novels.

Anja has a master’s in Narrative Futures, a bachelor’s in English lit, and a collection of specialized kitchen implements that is fast becoming unwieldy. She lives in Seattle, but enjoys exploring the world — literally, and also by way of baked goods and mythology.

Fun facts:

  • Favorite books include The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater and the Machineries of Empire trilogy by Yoon Ha Lee
  • Studied Old Norse as part of her English (?) degree
  • Once decided to write a story about video games (“Eurydice*”) even though 97% of her gaming knowledge comes from playing Ocarina of Time on the N64 as a child
  • “Anja” is pronounced like it rhymes with “lasagna,” which is also its only English rhyme

I wish I had time & words for

all of my dreams.
